The Raigad police on Sunday arrested a police constable accused of raping a trainee women constable, following the complaint lodged by the victim.
The accused has been identified as Nagesh Popat Gawde, a constable working in Raigad police headquarters. PSI Dhawale of Alibaug police station told dna: “The accused had lured the trainee women constable with a false promise of marriage, even after being married. He first raped her in Nagpur and then again at his room at police headquarters.
He further added: “The accused had filmed the victim while raping, and had threatened to malign her image in public and kill her, if she told anyone about the incident. But the victim somehow garnered courage to approach the police and register a complaint with the Alibaug police station on Saturday. Following this, a special unit from Alibaug police took him into the custody from his Pune’s Daund home, late in the night.”
The accused has been booked for rape and criminal intimidation under the IPC 376, 420, 417 and 323. After arrest, he was produced before the court which remanded him in police custody till Saturday.
According to sources, “getting weary of the regular assault, the victim had written about the incident to her senior earlier, but she was left unheard and no action was taken. But, when she threatened to take up the matter with seniors, the police eventually registered the complained against the accused.
Meanwhile, to investigate this matter transparently, the Maharashtra Navnirman Sena (MNS) has demanded that the matter be handed over to police outside Raigad.
